Emerge is a series of artists’ talks, professional workshops and behind-the-scenes tours organized by the UBC Visual Art Students’ Association (VASA) in collaboration with the Belkin Art Gallery and the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory (AHVA). Emerge 2016/17 was organized by VASA president Simranpreet Anand and Weiyi Chang, MA candidate in the Critical and Curatorial Studies Program, with support from VASA members Georgette Espina, Crystal Lan, Nick Loewen and Muriel Teich and from Deana Holmes, AHVA Undergraduate Advisor. Tour: SWARM Gallery Hop with Cake Collective

Josephine Lee, editor of the Undergraduate Journal of Art History, led tours during Arts Week.
Studio Visit: Vanessa Kwan

Artist Vanessa Kwan gave a tour and talked about her expansive practice that includes performance, curating, programming and working closely with communities.
Tour: Behind the Scenes at Equinox Gallery
21 October 2016, 6-8 pm
Director Sophie Brodovitch, an alumna of the UBC Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate program, gave a tour of one of Vancouver’s oldest commercial galleries and discussed her own career path, the history of Equinox Gallery and how professional relationships are developed with visual artists.
Workshop: How to Write an Artist’s Proposal with Cindy Mochizuki

Artist Cindy Mochizuki gave a workshop that discussed the details of applying for grants to the BC Arts Council and the City of Vancouver.

Workshop: How to Write an Artist Statement

Chris Gaudet, independent writer, Deana Holmes, Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory and Naomi Sawada gave a workshop on writing an artist’s statement for visual arts students.
Tour: Behind the Scenes at the Audain Art Museum, Whistler

Curator Darrin Martens, an alumni of the UBC Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate program, gave an in-depth tour and discussed the process and challenges of opening a new (opened March 2016) art museum.
