The Belkin Website Style Guide

EVENTS

Try to be consistent when naming events, so for example:

  • Artist talk: Name
  • Catalogue Launch: Name
  • Concert at the Belkin: Exhibition Title
  • Conference: Title
  • Conversations: Names
  • Curatorial Lecture: Name (Include talk title in body, not in title block)
  • Symposium: Title
  • Peter Wall Roundtable Event: Title
  • Film Series: Title
  • Inauguration: Artist, Artwork Title
  • Lecture: Name

When listing addresses for events, work from the smallest to biggest in detail, so for example:

  • Room 102, Lasserre Building, 6333 Memorial Road, UBC [LOCATION LINK]
  • Western Front, 303 East 8th Avenue, Vancouver [LOCATION LINK]

EXHIBITIONS

  • When listing the artists and curators for the right-hand column, add “, Curator” to the appropriate name so that it appears as such on the website. So for example,

NAME field ROLE field

Scott Watson, Curator Curator

Lorna Brown, Curator Curator

Kate Craig Artist

PUBLICATIONS

Include the catalogue’s full title in the title block, and create the rest of the information in the following manner:

2013, Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver
72 pages, b/w and colour, paperback
$30 CAD OR OUT OF PRINT

ISBN 978-0-88865-087-0

Exhibition catalogue from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (September 6–December 1, 2013).

Texts by Scott Watson, Geoffrey Carr and Chief Robert Joseph; edited by Scott Watson, Keith Wallace and Jana Tyner.

Blurb about catalogue if possible, could be pulled from publisher’s website.

Link to exhibition and any other affiliated events, etc.

DATES

  • Include a date and time wherever possible
  • The site will prompt you to add the actual date and time using a calendar popup – this is mandatory, but this information is not actually displayed

For the displayed date and time, use the format 7 February 2018, 2 pm or 6 June 2015, from 3-5:30 pm

PERMALINKS

  • If the title of the article contains meta-characters (accents, diacritics, non-Latin character) edit the permalink to contain the closest unaccented Latin character transliteration, and for glottal stops (ʔ) use 7.
    examples:

    • https://belkin.ubc.ca/xyz/c̓əsnaʔəm becomes https://belkin.ubc.ca/xyz/cesna7em
    • https://belkin.ubc.ca/xyz/xʷməθkʷəy̍əm becomes https://belkin.ubc.ca/xyz/xwmethkweyem

STYLE SHEET FOR WRITING 2018

Style

  • The Chicago Manual of Style should be used as the convention, except in specific cases as listed below.
  • Endnote and Footnote references are situated at the ends of sentences.
  • Endnotes instead of Footnotes are preferred
  • Font choices: The Belkin’s preferred font is Akzidenz-Grotesk Pro, but because this font is not available on all computers, default to Arial

Spelling

  • Always defer to Canadian spelling for words that have both Canadian and American spellings, except for in quoted matter where American spellings should be retained.
  • Use Canadian spelling for realize, subsidize, etc. (z preferred over s)
  • Use Canadian spelling for program (versus British programme)

Vocabulary

  • c. = circa, c. 1984 (space after c.)
  • full-time
  • Gallery = the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery
  • Belkin Art Gallery = the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery
  • the Belkin = the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery
  • UBC = The University of British Columbia (no periods)
  • Refer to artists by their last names

Formats

  • Epigrams should not be in enclosed quotes; attribution flush right with unspaced em-dash
  • When referring to a work of art, include the date of the work in parentheses the first time it is cited: “Three Islands in a Cove (1960) is one of Binning’s studies …”
  • Artworks and exhibition titles should be italicized

Punctuation Styles

  • Omit series comma (per Belkin house style, contra CMS).
  • Use double quotation marks.
  • Set punctuation inside quotation marks.
  • Use en dashes to connect numbers (CMS 6.78).
  • Use an en dash, not a hyphen, with a compound adjective when one of the elements is itself a compound (e.g., United Nations–sponsored; CMS 6.80).
  • Use em dashes to set off amplifying or explanatory elements of a sentence (CMS 6.82).
  • Omit comma before too at the end of a sentence.
  • Use a true multiplication symbol (×), set with spaces, instead of a lower-case x in dimensions.
  • 9.7 × 15.5 cm (spaced)
  • one space on either side of ellipsis: like … this
  • no space before and after slash: like/this

Degrees and Academic Disciplines

  • For consistency across the catalogue, set all academic degrees as abbreviations, without periods (e.g., BFA, MA, PhD).
  • Set the names of academic disciplines in lower case (CMS 10.20).

Numbers, Time, Dates and Measurements

  • 9 am to 5 pm, or 9 am–5 pm
  • use metric whenever possible
  • spell out “metre”, “foot”, etc. in prose
  • 9.7 × 15.5 cm (spaced)
  • Use numeric form for decades (e.g., 1960s; omit apostrophe; CMS 9.34) or sixties (but not the 60s)
  • In date spans for birth/death years, include all numerals (e.g., 1929–1954, not 1929–54).
  • Where a span of months or seasons is given in a journal citation, use an en dash (e.g., September–October, not September/October; CMS 14.180).
  • Use an en dash to mean to when connecting dates (e.g., August 10–11; June 14–August 15, 1973); however, use the word to when the dates mentioned are preceded by the word from (i.e., do not complete a from construction with an en dash).
  • 1 through 10 should be spelled out, except currency and temperature.
  • 9.7 × 15.5 cm (spaced)

Titles and Label Information for Artworks (always ask Teresa Sudeyko, Registrar, for final approval)

  • cm wherever possible
  • 9.7 × 15.5 cm (spaced)
  • material should not be capitalized, but should be on a new line
  • SAMPLE:

B.C. Binning (Canadian, 1909–1976)
Three Islands in a Cove, 1960
oil on canvas

89.0 × 106.5 cm
Gift of the Estate of Jessie Binning

The rule is this (according to CHIN, updated in 2010)

Enter the medium in a logical order. Multiple entries are allowed. If the sequence of application is known, list in order of application. Or, if the prominence or importance of materials is obvious, list them in order of importance, with the most prominent or important first. Terms should be singular nouns, except where the singular is inappropriate. Do not use abbreviations. Use lowercase except where the material is distinguished by a proper noun, such as Conté crayon, or is known by its brand name. Do not use brand names unless the material is known exclusively or primarily by that term. Use terminology in the language of the catalogue record. Include the appropriate diacritical marks. Use natural word order. Uncertain data should be followed by space and “?”.
