As a complement to the exhibition SUPERMOON: UBC Master of Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition at the Belkin Art Gallery, the MFA students curated M.F.A. Studios, 6363 Stores Road about their studios, influences and research.

Students in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of British Columbia have occupied the building at 6363 Stores Road since 1993. In 2013, the current graduating class had their studios moved to the newly constructed Audain Art Centre at 6398 University Boulevard and their former studio building is scheduled for demolition.

For the exhibition at the Koerner Library, the artists collected the exterior signage from 6363 Stores Road and have chosen to display alongside it an array of materials from their individual art practices. This conjunction signifies for them the process and the importance of studio-based research that is often highly tied to the location where it happens. This project points toward recent shifts in the University’s environment and to the uniqueness of conducting their research and art as these changes were implemented.

“Here are the textures, colours, shapes and other bits and pieces present in our work in conversation with the abandoned signage. Here are traces of our research molded by the space we inhabit.”

This exhibition is a collaboration between the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and the Walter C. Koerner Library at The University of British Columbia, and is made possible with the generous support of the Audain Foundation. Art in the Library offers new perspectives on contemporary art by presenting art that questions our current perceptions about the world around us.
