The swamp as a forest compost heap where things rot. Both Carr and Shadbolt were fascinated by decay — a response to their rain forest motif perhaps. It is useful to see the swamp as a metaphor of disfunctional cultural exchange. It is where old cultures decay and new ones impose themselves. Thus, Shadbolt's swamp forms look like pods. The idea is "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," the subject is the historical persecution of native culture.
